The 3D printing adventure continue...

Here is my latest adventure in the 3D printing. The snake is very popular animal integrated into clip/roll stopper designs. Here is my version. This is printed in plastic. As you can guess, It's a little flimsy as a clip but fine as a roll stopper.

The Test 3D Printed Clips Have Arrived!

Well, I have mixed feelings about these. They have very interesting look, rough and sandy feel, even polished one's don't look polished at all. However, I kind of like the rough textured ones.

Over all, I like them and I might use 3D printing service for some of my new products.

Autumn Leaves

Inspired by Japanese art, except using a laser engraver and resin rather than urushi lacquer. It is much more durable than an urushi finish. The pigment-mixed resin is filled in the cavity of the engraved figures so it won't peel or crack, like urushi lacquer.

The 3D Printed Clips!

Well they're not here yet, but they should be here in about 3 weeks. I've been looking for a way to make my own designer clips, but it has been difficult to do until recently. About a month ago, I accidentally found a 3D printing company called Shapeways. Their service is straight forward and reasonable enough for my budget. The best part is that the order can be made entirely on-line.

There are excellent free 3D programs available on-line. I'm using Blender, an excellent program you can get for free! You can download it from their web site. I have had some experience with other 3D programs a decade ago, but leaning Blender took a while because of the interface deference.

A clip is relatively simple shape, so it's not too difficult to make one if you know the basics of using a 3D program (I haven't used 3D program for a decade so took a little while). I'm excited but I don't expect actual products to be as slick as the computer generated images, but hope close enough.

Unlike plastics, they can't directly print in metal, rather they are printed in special wax then, the traditional way of lost wax casting is used to produce the final form in metal.

So stay tuned for real Clips!

Unlike the usual muggy and humid weather in NYC this time of year, Memorial Day weekend this year was gorgeous! Below is a panoramic view from the Brooklyn Bridge Park looking towards lower Manhattan. This view made me feel great about being a New Yorker. However, I miss the Twin Towers.

New additions: These are for people who like fatter pens. Black and silver, as well as gold and brown pearlescent swirls in Alumilite resin casting. It's like a cosmic storm!

Roll stopper alternatives.
